Neil Wintrip, Founding Director of Devon-based A1 Positive Recycling (www.a1prp.co.uk), is passionate about what the project is achieving within the South West communities it serves. The not-for-profit social enterprise has been established within the Devon community since 1992, although it started out life as a recycling centre for televisions and video players. In 1997, Neil learned about building computers from a friend and since then the organisation's focus has been on recycling computers, mobile phones and ink cartridges as well as providing training and work experience for volunteers, typically younger people that have just left school and are keen to get some work skills under their belts.

The recycling side of the operation takes in old equipment from schools and local businesses that have upgraded to new systems and then refurbishes that equipment to be sold on to willing customers – businesses and consumers – that want a new bit of kit but don't want to pay high street prices.

“The first system we sold back in 1997 was an entire multimedia package, including keyboard, mouse and monitor, for £100,” Neil explained. “We've been selling on refurbished PCs to the community since and our customers come back to us for system upgrades. I've had many people say to me that they prefer coming to us rather than some of the large high street chains because they feel we are better qualified to guide them on what to buy than their staff. Local businesses are very supportive of our work and it's also viewed positively by community groups as we can get kids off the streets to work with us as volunteers.”

The organisation depends upon the volunteers Neil can bring in as without their time and effort the organisation would not be as well marketed in the local Exeter area as it is. Neil also trains volunteers to help recycle and sort the equipment donated from organisations and to liaise with the organisation's partner charities which can also receive old equipment on behalf of A1 Positive Recycling, effectively acting as an agent. “Charities themselves can't house much of the larger equipment that we can,” Neil explained, “but people will often look to charities to offload much of these older systems so these partnerships are important to both parties.”

A1 Positive Recycling is a good example of how a project can help out the wider community, plus the environment, by teaming up with organisations across the area, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill and also helping end users – businesses and average Joes – to gain access to affordable, usable IT equipment. That it also gives community members the opportunity to get involved, perhaps enhancing their skill-sets in the process, is the icing on the cake.

I spoke to Neil about the organisation's aims and plans for the future and he shows no sign of slowing down. “I want to build an educational technology centre within the South West region that will be funded by our recycling and refurbishment of computer equipment, mobile phones and ink cartridges,” he said. “The centre will support vulnerable adults including those with learning difficulties. Many people come out of school or work lacking the necessary skills, whether that be in relation to IT or other hands-on business-related skills. Since the WEEE directive issued by the EU in 2004, it is illegal to incorrectly dispose of recyclable consumables, or transport waste without a waste carriage license.



We have been issued with a waste carriage and waste management exemption by the UK Environment Agency in April 2005. This exempts us from license requirement. We have been listed on the public register as exempt since 2005.

Stand up for your rights:

One of my favourite quotes is from Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the USA:

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'press on' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”

And never was he more right than now, when in the middle of the worst economy in living memory, when conditions are dire enough to lead to talk of the Great Depression of the 1930s, business owners are battening down the hatches and just waiting to "ride out" the storm.

Waiting for this to end will kill your business. It will be a long, painful wait. It’s as simple as that. You have to be proactive and that proactivity will be driven by persistence.

Yet you'll notice if you look around you, there are some businesses which are not only "getting by" in these difficult times but are actually growing. I have friends in my personal consulting group who can’t cope with the number of leads coming into their business. All those who do well share the same characteristic: "persistence".

There's no doubt about it: Recession is here and we're in the middle of it. And every day the media is showing you the worst of the worst. This can effect how you feel, day to day. The solution? A commitment to persistence.

And no one is pretending it's easy. It takes a certain mettle to keep your doors open when business is hard to get. It's tempting to give in, and let it all fall apart. That's the easy way out though.

Government make it worse by giving out our money to the Banks a staggering 3350Billion Pounds of it in fact & the banks do not help us at all so we as well say goodbye to the £350Billion pounds of our Money & a big cry out what are you stupid politicians thinking is it that they have no idea on what they are or have just done drifting us further & further into a deep black hole of endless debt.

Why can't we look at this from another angle & a better point of view to help us stop the Economy slump of a slow down by simply taking back the £350Billion pounds from the Banks & then give every UK British citizen £3Million Pounds each hand out for life to last them the rest of there life this would simply boost up our economy & create more jobs this will stop the UK Recession in it's tracks & politicians would be seen as heroes. Who could have saved the UK from a great depression rather than destroying our great country & then 'n' only then would Government have the backing of the Great British public on a national scale but I guess without the public backing this simple plan things will just keep getting worse. I of course would expect complete recognition for my role & simple solutions of course.

This will generate a stronger unified country making us smarter more precise about our own economy giving us full control over it & on how it is run.

Because YOU all know that I'm right, strategies, and techniques I've shared with you... and you know they work. YOU know how business is a matter of finding out what people actually want rather than what they need, and then giving it to them Fact.

You KNOW price is not an issue and it's all about value. You KNOW how to do all this. So why have you not done it yet?

You know that if you turn Government around you will see more community spirit & a positive change for the furure of our Country it's not about Government it's about you & me standing together & saying we have had enough of MP's talk talk & not enough actions so stand up & help to make a positive change today & be a leader that you where born to be, stand up for every generation rather than just sitting on your backside moaning about it. Stand up for your rights as a human being MP's & politicians don't realy give a damn if they throw away your money.

They just sit back & laugh at us for paying our Taxes in the 1st place so we are the stupid ones for letting them carry on this way. after all that is why we voted for them wasn't it to get uus in to debt.

I want to see you all stand up & make a difference for a positive change ‘so just do it’ you can improve and gain more public support from hundreds to thousands of people in the UK.

When you do whats right for the people, Yet it takes courage and fortitude to "do it all" when everyone else is doing the opposite. It's hard to plug away when everyone else is cutting back.

But, right now, this recession DOES represent a grand opportunity to anyone prepared to stand up firm against fear, uncertainty and doubt. Moral is at an all-time low, and all your competitor partys will have slashed their budgets and be running scared in this current economy.
Don't forget all of the people still have the power to stop paying taxes into a failing system so money and most still want what you have to offer... if only you can go that extra distance to show the public the true value of how much power the British people have in the first place as to what you can do for all the British Public.
I’m am talking about positive thinking. solid, But the thing that’s going to get you to IMPLEMENT these strategies when everyone else is moaning is persistence. It always pays off. Eventually when you hit that "sweet spot" in standing up for your rights, you'll find you've cracked it – and the people will grow and grow, regardless of the other parties.
